NH Pukyung Pig Farmers Agricultural Cooperative is one of the largest meat producers in South Korea. The company's new plant in Gimhay-City is designed to have a capacity of 4500 pigs and 700 cattle per day.
NH Pukyung Pig Farmers Agricultural Cooperative is one of the largest meat producers in South Korea. For several years, the company has focused on solutions based on principles, such as safety, quality, efficiency of operation and eco friendliness.
Consequently, NH Pukyung Pig Farmers hired NIRAS to produce the masterplan for the company’s new greenfield production facilities in Gimhay-City close to Busan.
NIRAS’ expert knowledge of masterplanning and hygienic design has secured NH Pukyung Pig Farmers a state-of-the-art production factory that the future demands with the highest possible quality level of all products and hygienic layouts.
The new production facilities in Gimhay-City close to Busan is now ready to produce.
The Masterplan's factory layout and design principles will ensure an efficient plant with a streamlined flow and a high and uniform quality. In cooperation with NH Pukyung Pig Farmers, NIRAS has made and controlled the mass balance to secure a lean production without any bottlenecks in the various production areas.
Thanks to NIRAS’s suggestion on master planning and their advice in terms of the modification and determination of reception, slaughtering, dispatching, and waste disposal, we were able to design a slaughterhouse of higher quality.

The new efficient production layout will not only solve the capacity bottlenecks that might occur throughout the year, the Masterplan also includes modern automated production technologies for saving manpower and ensuring the highest possible quality level.
According to Jae-Pil Han project manager at NH Pukyung Pig Farmers, NIRAS’ contribution was crucial to the project:
“Thanks to NIRAS’s suggestion on masterplanning and their advice in terms of the modification and determination of reception, slaughtering, dispatching, and waste disposal, we were able to design a slaughterhouse of higher quality. As a result, we were also able to design a tender process securing high standard of fair competition in the selection of equipment vendor, by presenting detailed demand specification information and therefore we could manage to prevent any potential dispute after the contract.”

Based on its sustainable principles, it was of vital importance for NH Pukyung Pig Farmers that reduction of energy and water would be included in the masterplan for a new facility.
From the company’s perspective it was obviously important to reduce production costs, but also to protect the world’s resources.
Due to NIRAS’ expertise in refrigeration, it has been possible to find a solution that both will insure the correct meat quality while also guaranteeing the lowest possible drip loss.
NIRAS has many years of experience in designing utilities for the meat industry, in regard to energy-friendly solutions as well. This experience was naturally handed over to NH Pukyung Pig Farmers in order to ensure that the right equipment and installations were purchased and installed in the new and modern meat production plant.
Danish knowledge of hygienic production methods is highly recognized worldwide, and NIRAS has many years of experience in securing the delivery of the very best hygiene solutions.
NIRAS’ solid expertise resulted in a masterplan ensuring that the new proposed plant was designed with the “best practice” hygiene solutions and the “best practice” modern automated production solutions and technologies complying with the relevant EU and US hygiene requirements.
Project manager at NH Pukyung Pig Farmers Jae-Pil Han emphasizes the importance of the "high expertise of NIRAS engineers in each area, and their dedicated collaboration with a Korean design firm".
Jae-Pil Han also stresses that NIRAS' input included "consulting the design firm on detailed architectural design".
According to Jae-Pil Han NIRAS’ expertise meant the construction could subsequently proceed without any major issues or obstacles.
