This will involve upgrading the station's infrastructure and renewing the tracks. Hillerød Station plays a crucial role as a vital junction for rail traffic in the northeastern part of the Danish island of Zealand. It serves as the terminus for several important railway lines, including the S-train line A, Lille Nord/Gribskov Line, and Frederiksværk Line. Soon, Hillerød Station will also become a connection point to the brand-new Favrholm Station, which will serve commuters heading to the new North Zealand Hospital. The project is part of the infrastructure plan towards 2035.

"This is a task we are incredibly proud of," says Susan Galschiøt Galsøe, senior project manager at NIRAS. "We have significantly strengthened our position in large railway projects through our participation in significant projects in both Norway and Denmark. We are fully aware of how central Hillerød Station is for rail traffic in North Zealand and for commuters in general, especially in light of the upcoming North Zealand Hospital."

NIRAS will handle the design and technical consulting in all phases of the project in a multidisciplinary collaboration between departments within railway, geotechnics and structures, drainage, high voltage, and environment.

"This is a recognition of NIRAS' expertise and experience in multidisciplinary projects, and we are proud to be chosen for this task," adds Susan Galschiøt Galsøe. "It shows that we possess a high level of competence within our respective fields and are capable of handling projects of this nature."

Efficient passenger flow and reduced travel time

The project includes the establishment of new track connections and track renewal at the north and south ends of the station, which will lead to a significant reduction in travel times. This upgrade is also expected to result in an increase in the total number of journeys to between 215,000 and 263,000 in 2027.

There is also a particular focus on increased accessibility with the establishment of a brand-new footbridge that stretches across the entire station. The footbridge is equipped with an elevator, making it easy for people with reduced mobility, such as those with walking difficulties, parents with strollers, and wheelchair users, to use the station. Additionally, the existing pedestrian tunnel will also be extended. These upgrades are crucial to ensure the increased passenger flow resulting from the rise in passenger traffic.

NIRAS will carry out:

  • The connection between Frederiksværk Line tracks 11 and 12 on the southern part will be extended through the central part of the station area. The tracks will connect from the Gribskov Line on Lille Nord on the northern part of the station. This solution creates direct train connections from Helsingør via Lille Nord and from Helsinge via the Gribskov Line to the new station, Favrholm, at North Zealand Hospital.

  • Establishment of a new platform along tracks 11 and 12 as well as a new grid platform.

  • Extension of the existing platform tunnel under the new tracks and over to the existing station building, including stairs, an elevator, and a new superstructure.

  • A new footbridge that crosses the track area. The footbridge is equipped with stairs and an elevator and functions as a district connection.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
