Expanding production capabilities for a brewery in Ghana

Brewery NS Edited

To support the growth of a major brewery in Ghana, FDT, now part of NIRAS was engaged as a technical consultant to oversee a comprehensive expansion project. The aim was to enhance production capacity, optimise processes, and improve operational efficiency across various facets of the brewery’s operations. Drawing on their expertise in project management and process design, NIRAS ensured the expansion was executed seamlessly, with a focus on sustainability and compliance.

Tailored solutions for enhanced efficiency

NIRAS played a pivotal role in the brewery’s expansion, undertaking a range of critical tasks:

  • Scope of Work Development: A detailed Scope of Work (SOW) was prepared, outlining project objectives, deliverables, and timelines to ensure clarity and alignment among all stakeholders.
  • Technical Assessment: A thorough evaluation of the existing brewery infrastructure was conducted to identify potential areas for improvement. This assessment enabled NIRAS to recommend targeted upgrades that would support the brewery's increased production needs.
  • Process Design: Working closely with both the client and vendors, NIRAS optimised the brewery's production processes. The focus was on improving efficiency, product quality, and safety standards. This collaboration ensured that the new design met all operational requirements and industry regulations.
  • Validation and Compliance Support: Throughout the project, NIRAS provided validation support to ensure all new installations complied with industry standards. This step was critical in achieving regulatory compliance and ensuring the successful implementation of the expansion.
  • HAZOP Assessment: A comprehensive Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) assessment was conducted to identify potential risks associated with the expanded operations. This proactive approach helped safeguard the environment, personnel, and assets during and after the expansion.

Involvement in key expansion projects

NIRAS’s involvement extended across multiple key projects within the brewery's expansion, each contributing to a significant enhancement of production capabilities:

  • Brewery Production Expansion: NIRAS provided expertise in expanding the brewery’s production capacity, ensuring that the new processes could handle increased output without compromising quality.
  • Raw Materials Handling Expansion: The team improved the handling and storage systems for raw materials, streamlining workflow and reducing the potential for bottlenecks in production.
  • Fridge Plant Expansion: An essential upgrade to the cooling facilities was executed, providing sufficient and efficient cooling capacity for the increased production volume.
  • New DAL Plant Installation: The installation of a new Deaerated Liquor (DAL) plant was a crucial component in the brewing process, contributing to the consistency and quality of the final product.
  • New Carbo-Blender Installation: NIRAS was involved in the installation and commissioning of a new carbo-blender, which is essential for precise carbonation control in beverages.
  • New Can Line Setup: To accommodate the growing demand for canned beverages, a new can line was set up, enhancing the brewery’s packaging efficiency and versatility.
  • Utilities Support: NIRAS ensured that all expansion projects were supported by reliable utilities, enabling uninterrupted operations and reducing the risk of downtime.

Strengthening production and positioning for future growth

Through its technical expertise and project management skills, NIRAS played a vital role in the successful implementation of the brewery’s expansion initiatives. The result was a significant enhancement of the brewery's production capabilities, enabling it to meet growing market demand while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. This strategic expansion positions the brewery for sustained growth and competitiveness in the dynamic beverage industry.
