Project
Grans Bryggeri, a historic name in Norwegian brewing, has been on a transformative journey to elevate its brewing operations. Guided by a comprehensive masterplan developed by NIRAS in 2016, Grans has replaced its old facilities with a state-of-the-art brewery capable of producing up to 200,000 hectolitres of specialty beer annually.
- SECTORS: Food & Beverage
NIRAS was selected as the engineering partner to bring this vision to life, from initial planning to the final stages of start-up and commissioning, ensuring that Grans can now meet future demand with advanced technology, optimised processes, and sustainable practices.
125 years of brewing
The new brewery facility encompasses all facets of modern brewing, including raw material handling, brewhouse operations, yeast management, fermentation, beer processing, filtration, and bright beer tanks (BBTs).
The brewery has complimented the original buildings that date back to 1899 where the Gran family first started their brewing business in the scenic location of Sandefjord in Norway. While the original building is protected and will eventually become a visitor centre, the new design has taken care to keep as much of the atmosphere from the old buildings as possible.
A multidisciplinary effort to meet high standards
NIRAS’ multidisciplinary team was leading engineering and functional tendering activities, with particular attention to achieving seamless integration between high-level planning and the technical requirements essential for construction. By engaging key vendors and suppliers early in the process, NIRAS coordinated all elements, from drawing up detailed scope finalisations, layout plans, and process flow diagrams to preparing tender documents and handling tender adjudication.
One of the critical challenges in the project was ensuring that the new facility meets Grans’ high standards for reliability and operational efficiency, even under peak production loads. The brewing process, expected to run with high automation levels, will be anchored by a “one operator concept” in the brewhouse. Recommendations from NIRAS included adding an additional steam boiler to accommodate peak loads, ensuring stable operations even at increased production capacities, while cooling and CO₂ recovery systems were carefully assessed to allow for potential upgrades in the future.
Designing for efficiency and ease of use
High standards of process reliability and low environmental impact guided NIRAS’s recommendations. With automated malt reception in bulk, brewhouse and beer processing systems use to streamline processes, the design promotes both efficiency and ease of use. During the tendering phase, trusted suppliers like ZiemannHolvrieka, Alfa Laval, Pall, Pentair, Krones and GEA were evaluated for their experience and equipment compatibility, ensuring that Grans Brewery will benefit from industry-leading brewing technologies. Including e.g. equipment to produce high quality non-alcohol beers.
The first brew was made in summer of 2020, and NIRAS’s extensive involvement spanned from Conceptual design, Tendering & contracting, engineering follow-up through to commissioning. This collaboration has future-proofed Grans Brewery with scalable, sustainable systems designed to meet the demands of a growing market while honouring the quality for which the Grans name is known.
"This project has been a transformative journey for Grans Bryggeri, and we’re very happy with the outcome. Working with NIRAS, we’ve managed to preserve the legacy and spirit of our original 1899 brewery while embracing a future-ready design that equips us to meet growing demand with cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices.
It’s not just about increasing production; it’s about upholding the quality and tradition that people associate with Grans, and we’re proud to carry this heritage into the future" - Håkon Gran, Brewmaster and co-owner of Grans Bryggeri.
Through this comprehensive upgrade, Grans and NIRAS have built a facility that merges tradition with innovation, positioning the brewery as a leader in modern, environmentally conscious beer production.
