New offices in Colombia will support growth in Latin-America.
After receiving the award notice of the EU Framework Contracts SIEA 2018, where NIRAS is lead in two lots and partner in three (out of six technical lots in total), we started working towards the geographical expansion that was planned to take place in connection with the implementation of the Framework Contracts.
NIRAS has a long lasting experience in working in Latin-America, where we have implemented more than 70 assignments covering agriculture, environment, energy, forestry, to name a few. From these assignments, 26 were implemented through Framework Contracts.
With the new phase of the Framework Contracts starting in May 2018, NIRAS decided to expand our activities and our presence in order to be able to reply to the demanding work in the Framework Contracts. Our new office in Bogotá is an important step in that direction, where our new dedicated framework staff cover a number of relevant technical sectors and different working languages.
Bogotá has been, for several years now, one of the most important regional hubs in Latin America and the Caribbean, ranking 5th amongst the first 10 business friendly cities of the whole region. It has been consolidated as a regional base for a wide range of international businesses, including European companies. With close to 10 million habitants and a steadily growing economy, it has both a strategic location in between Central America, the Caribbean and South America as well as high levels of education enrollment and well prepared human resources. It also offers the second largest airport of the whole region after Sao Paulo and the best connected regionally.

Colombia is both an attractive country in term of its positive macroeconomic conditions, a large growing market and also it´s potential for continuous support from international cooperation in several strategic areas such as renewable energies, sustainable trade and production, fight against corruption through public management strengthening, as well as human rights and gender equality promotion amongst others.
Even if the current socio-political situation is quite controversial, after the peace agreement process concluded in 2015 and already under implementation, security in the whole territory has improved steadily for over a decade, with a homicides rate that has dropped from 45% to 21% (per 100 k hab) between 2004 and 2016.
Compared to other regional countries, Colombia stands by its stable and sound macroeconomics: a balanced public budget, low levels of public debt and inflation that is under control at around 3 percent for the last 4-5 years. Also financial services that are relatively sophisticated by regional standards and fairly high levels of education enrolment.
