Anil is committed to excellence and attention to detail when passionately working within his two niche areas: designing tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in complex urban environments and integrating advanced geotechnical monitoring systems. These systems monitor ground conditions in real-time, ensuring tunnel safety and stability.

Anil Günes is a Senior Tunnel Engineer at NIRAS, specialising in the design, construction, and maintenance of tunnels from the initial planning process to the feasibility studies and through to the final construction and operational phase.

“My role involves overseeing the entire life cycle of tunnel projects and ensuring that projects are completed in accordance with safety standards, reducing unforeseen costs through the application of necessary optimisations within the project, and also adhering to environmental regulations. Our focus on safety and environmental sustainability helps our clients meet regulatory requirements and enhance their reputation,” says Anil Günes.

“Each project presents unique obstacles”

Anil’s job requires a deep understanding of both engineering principles and urban planning to navigate the challenges of constructing tunnels beneath bustling cities. What is especially exciting about his job is making an impact on society and solving complex engineering obstacles.

“What motivates me most about working on significant infrastructure projects is the profound impact they have on communities and the environment. These projects are not just about building structures and tunnels that facilitate efficient transportation; they are about creating solutions that enhance people’s lives, improve safety, and promote sustainability. Knowing that my work contributes to the resilience and growth of urban areas, and helps protect them from natural disasters, gives me a deep sense of purpose and fulfilment.”

Additionally, Anil is highly motivated by the opportunity to solve complex engineering problems.

“Each project presents unique obstacles, from varying geological conditions to tangled design requirements, and finding solutions to these problems is very rewarding. The thrill of seeing a tunnel project come to life, knowing that it will improve transportation and people’s living standards, is exhilarating,” says Anil Günes.

“Knowing that my work contributes to creating safer, more connected communities gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment.”

“It was thrilling to experience the final tunnelling process under the busy railway lines directing to Copenhagen Central Station, passing under the vibrant Meatpacking District and crossing the existing metro line very close underground. The project overcame a number of complex challenges, and this was a great milestone.”

A project with significant complexity along with immense growth potential

It’s the cloudburst project, Kalvebod Brygge Cloudburst Tunnel, where NIRAS delivers multidisciplinary engineering consultancy. It's also a project with significant complexity, which requires Anil’s and his colleagues' technical skills.

“Although I wasn’t directly involved in the design phase of the project, my role was to  ensure its successful execution. I frequently visited the construction site, working closely with the client during site supervision visits. My primary focus was to ensure that the construction adhered to the design specifications and that every aspect of the implementation aligned with the intended design perspective,” says Anil Günes.

The tunnel is part of a larger cloudburst management plan for Copenhagen, aimed at mitigating the impact of extreme weather events. One of the key goals of the Kalvebod Brygge Cloudburst Tunnel is to minimise environmental impact. By efficiently managing stormwater, the tunnel helps protect urban areas from flooding while also reducing the strain on existing drainage systems. This contributes to the overall sustainability and resilience of Copenhagen’s infrastructure.

According to Anil, one of the most challenging aspects of working on significant infrastructure projects is managing the complexity and scale of these endeavors. Adhering to strict timelines and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards can be daunting. However, these challenges also provide immense opportunities for professional growth and development.

“Overcoming these obstacles contributes to my development as an engineer,” says Anil Günes.

An international job in a passionate team

One of NIRAS highly international departments is the tunnels department, where colleagues hail from diverse countries such as Türkiye, Greece, England, and Ecuador, bringing with them a wealth of strong backgrounds and highly qualitative skills.

“This diversity not only enriches our work environment but also enhances our technical capabilities. Our team is dynamic, enthusiastic, and composed of highly skilled technical specialists. It is always a joy to collaborate with such a talented and passionate group,” says Anil Günes about the value of working alongside international colleagues who enjoy working on projects together across borders and adding value to our clients, while benefiting about the opportunity to grow.

“My role is highly international, involving projects in different countries. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to learn from different engineering traditions and practices. This international exposure has a significant impact on my way of working. It encourages me to be more open-minded. It also helps me develop a global perspective on engineering challenges and solutions, which I think is invaluable in today’s interconnected world,” says Anil Günes.

Professional community with growth opportunities

Anil has been at NIRAS for one year and within this timeframe, he has experienced tremendous professional development within a strong and supportive community.

“Absolutely, NIRAS places a high value on personal preferences and career aspirations, providing countless opportunities for learning and advancement. The steep learning curve has been both challenging and rewarding, with increased responsibilities and involvement in exciting projects. The professional community here is strong, with colleagues who are always willing to share their knowledge and support each other’s growth. This collaborative atmosphere has made my development journey both enjoyable and fulfilling.

The culture is also something Anil considers highly rewarding compared to the previous companies Anil has been working at in Türkiye, where he is from.

“What I like best about working at NIRAS is the culture of innovation and collaboration. In my department, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of engineering to develop cutting-edge sustainable solutions. The department stands out for its multidisciplinary approach, where experts from various fields come together to tackle complex challenges. This collaborative environment ensures that we deliver the best possible outcomes for our projects."

Once Copenhagen was a dream – today it’s a reality

“During my university years, I embarked on a backpacking trip across Europe. Out of all the cities I visited during my journey, Copenhagen stood out as the best. It has always been my dream to live in this city, and I am thrilled that this dream has now come true,” says Anil Günes.

From a professional perspective, it was Anil’s desire to work in Denmark, renowned for its engineering excellence and high standards of living.

“The Danish work culture emphasises a healthy work-life balance, which has positively impacted my overall well-being. I appreciate the collaborative approach and open communication within the team,” says Anil Günes.

Especially the flat organisational structure and the emphasis on teamwork have been refreshing and have helped Anil grow both professionally and personally. He says:

“This diverse team brings together a wealth of knowledge and perspectives, and this enhances our problem-solving capabilities. While I miss the vibrant culture, my close-knit friend group, and the delicious cuisine in Türkiye, the professional growth and quality of life in Denmark have been rewarding.”
