A tunnel engineer's global perspective

Sercan Kerem Tomac, senior tunnel engineer, has many year's of international experience within tunnel and geotechnical design of large-scale infrastructure projects.
Sercan is especially a key player in the design of the Nordhavn Tunnel project in Copenhagen, which for him is both a complex project to work on and yet very rewarding, as it will bring great value to the infrastructure in the Nordhavn community and Copenhagen.
“Nordhavn is a major project in every aspect and contributing to a project that directly improves the city’s infrastructure, while optimising engineering solutions, is very rewarding,” said Sercan.
While the Nordhavn Tunnel is undeniably complex, Sercan knows that size doesn’t always dictate complexity. Whether big or small, every project is an opportunity to push the boundaries of engineering and find the best solutions.
"Contributing to a project that directly improves the city’s infrastructure is very rewarding. But my real satisfaction comes from optimizing engineering solutions, regardless of the project’s size."

"3D modelling allows us to accurately represent complex geometries and optimise designs for efficiency. I enjoy working with these tools to develop more precise and economical solutions."

As a skilled user of sophisticated 3D modelling technology, Sercan utilises these tools not only to create realistic design visualisations but also to enhance cost-effectiveness and efficiency in projects.
“With advancements in both software and computing power, 3D modelling has become much more accessible. Traditional 2D design approaches often lead to conservative solutions, whereas 3D modelling allows us to accurately represent complex geometries and optimise designs for efficiency. I enjoy working with these tools to develop more precise and economical solutions,” said Sercan.
According to Sercan, the ability to create highly detailed, accurate representations leads to improved collaboration and more effective decision-making with the client. Additionally, technology can help drive smarter, more efficient engineering solutions.
Sercan works within a diverse and international team where collaboration and knowledge-sharing is an essential part of working as one team to deliver the best solutions to the project and the client. Sercan mentions:
“In our tunneling department, we have colleagues from Türkeye, Greece, and the UK. We have a highly collaborative work environment, and the willingness to share knowledge and support each other is something I truly value. It creates a positive atmosphere where people are always ready to help."
